Our next project will be painting the interior of the church. We estimate the cost at $14,000. The ceiling needs to be painted as well as the wall.
Sun through the years had faded the red carpet. In the back of the church and down the aisles we left the painted floor. The floor under the carpet had never been painted so we decided to showcase the natural wood.
Through a generous donation, we were able to refinish the original floors, round the edges a bit and add a much needed step.
One of the first projects the Friends tackled was to replace the wrap around steps and provide a ramp. First to make the steps safer. There was almost a 12 inch drop from the door top of the step, so it was easy to 'fall' out of the church. Secondly, there were cracks in the pavement and water was getting under the steps and eroding them.
After several years of raising funds Friends were able to pour new steps, secure the foundation, pour a ramp and still keep the historical look of the Union Church. A special thanks to Forrest Purcell, Chet Purcell and Spence Basinger for their guidance and planning on this project.
In the late spring of 2020, Friends of the Union Church noticed an odd odor inside the church and with further inspection realized that we had bats in the roof. Professionals were called and got to work correcting the problem. Friends got busy raising funds!
Through the generous donations of a community of supporters, the bats have been removed and the cleaning process is almost complete. We are currently cleaning up the very last of the droppings.
